Tenaris supplies products for many offshore projects

Petrobras chose Tenaris’s products for its challenging offshore pipeline project that will connect the Uruguá and Tambaú offshore fields in Brazil’s Santos basin with the Mexilhão platform, located 80 miles from São Sebastião port. The products had to be able to withstand high pressure and high temperature conditions in water depths ranging from 3,280 to 4,600 feet. The project is expected to produce 600 millions cubic feet of gas per day.

Tenaris supplied 187 Km of 18” diameter X65 grade steel tubes with wall thicknesses ranging from 0.750 to 0.875 inches. The combination of heavy wall thickness and small-diameters grants the tubes the necessary properties to withstand demanding conditions.

In order to comply with Petrobras’s quality standards and production schedule, Tenaris installed an innovative pre-cooling system in the internal welding area of the Confab mill in Pindamonhangaba to guarantee the production center comply with the production schedule. The local team had to implement special inspection and finishing practices to avoid potential dimensional defects that could not be corrected during final calibration.

This the first time that the welded tubes mill in Brazil had produced a large volume of small-diameter tubes with heavy wall thickness. “We proved that Tenaris is prepared to face new challenges in the offshore market, providing products with high quality standards,” said Antonio Fazanaro, Manufacturing Manager of Tenaris’s welded tubes mill in Brazil.
